A brief look at Overlords accompanied by additional content (14k words).

Just like many others in the Jam, I had a scope problem. This game was actually supposed to be made in Narrat, but I couldn’t implement several mechanics, so I decided to turn it into a kinetic visual novel, using the entire project as a grand introduction to something bigger, which will be released in Narrat.

Overlords — Justitia et Pax was, for me, a great experience in exploring the theme of penal units. It’s a game I like to listening more than talking about it because, honestly, I touched on many different topics—all revolving around various forms of tyranny: affective tyranny, institutional tyranny (which is the central theme), hierarchical tyranny, and the kind that is willingly accepted as a natural response to what happens in the world. There are many themes, and I’m not sure if I handled them all correctly, except for institutional tyranny, which is where most of the game’s focus lies.

Something I really enjoyed was finally getting to buy RPG Maker MZ and test the tool, understanding why people say creating visual novels in it is better than in MV (a tool I had pretty much given up on testing). I played around with several features that I found really fun, and I think I’ll be able to explore them properly from now on.

This devlog comes with a general update, adding approximately 14,000 words to the final section of the game, along with some adjustments based on feedback to improve the overall experience.
