[Fixes] A cool jam + ö that broke everything
Fixes: Just a quick list of fixes I ended up messing up while trying to create the web version:
- Fixed the lock that prevented the PT-BR version from reaching the final chapter.
- Fixed the bug that made the faces of 3 characters disappear.
- Fixed the battleback swap issue that caused crashes due to a compression error.
- Fixed minor accentuation errors.

I thought a lot about what I would do regarding Northern Saga, because it allows for a more realistic approach to the Viking Age, touching on fascinating topics like the Scandinavian kingdoms, the Carolingian Empire, and the other side of the Viking invasion—such as the formation of England and battles against Alfred the Great. This focus even ties directly to the game's first challenge, Village Raid, which provides an excellent starting point for these themes.
However, including a Valkyrie in the game, as well as elements like Runes of Power, posed a major problem for me, to put it mildly. I naturally lean towards historical accuracy because it's a familiar domain, whereas Norse mythology feels distant to me. Sure, you can draw from sagas and poems to incorporate dragons and magic into the story—Völsunga Saga is full of such elements—but I don't have much to say about this approach. This stems from the fact that these poems are, ultimately, poems. Treating them as literal documents rather than fiction creates consistency issues. It's akin to using Greek epics as historical evidence, which is problematic when building coherent worlds. And I'm a stickler for world-building consistency.
Take Odin’s powers, for example—it’s incredibly difficult to craft any story around them that remains coherent from a broader world-building perspective unless the narrative is deeply personal. My storytelling style, however, focuses on creating worlds where the protagonist’s arc unfolds alongside a functioning ecosystem of economies, peoples, intrigues, and cities. This makes the coexistence of myth and a grounded world a tricky balance within my methodology.
My intention is Götrik be a foul-mouthed protagonist, the problem is that when you follow this structure you are betting that it will not sound childish and everything needs to be very well constructed so that it does not become something that is just for shock value. Within the message that I want to convey, in my native language, I can 'dodge' this type of juvenile situation, using insults that have a plurality of meanings. In English, I don't really have the vocabulary for this, and I spent a day just researching language vices to see if I can make the insults, the swear words, more meaningful and less frivolous, because the intention is for the character to instantly vent his frustrations, airing everything as soon as he thinks, but I can't necessarily convey this in the text and occasionally I revise it in search of something that conveys, not only more naturalness, but coherence in the scene.
Overall, it was a fun experience, I experimented with a lot of things but, unfortunately, it delayed everything I wanted to do this month. It shouldn't have taken so much time but; 1) finding plugins, 2) learning the tool's tricks, 3) remembering things, 4) a lot of time fitting text into dialog boxes, because just producing isn't enough... Simply a hellish process of production and adaptation.
I made a serious mistake while working on RPG Maker: I wrote a book and then tried to fit that book into the dialogues. This made the dialogues feel 'broken,' and I really didn’t know how to adjust them in a way that felt aesthetically pleasing. The initial solution is to write in a more generalist manner, keeping everything within 49 characters. This allows the sentence to fluctuate slightly in both languages, creating an adaptable line. I also need to test RPG Maker MZ. From what I’ve read, many improvements have been made in the areas I enjoy creating and exploring. One thing is certain: managing resources was something I really enjoyed, and I want to explore that further in the future, completely removing the combat aspect while integrating the plugin’s data system to create a tabletop RPG dynamic.
+ Because of a inocent "ö" a web version is impractical. I've used special characters in a lot of things, and I've spent all day making corrections here and there, but I try to get the web version to work and I give up. I'm spending too much time on something that simply doesn't give any results. I have to do better next time. To be fair, I didn't remember putting that ö in so many places in files and so on, but apparently I did. A lot!
